Does international PIX exist? What you can actually do today to get paid from abroad

There is no official international PIX — but you can already sell abroad and settle into Brazil by PIX. Understand the difference and what it changes for your company.

"International PIX" is one of the fastest-growing searches among companies selling abroad — and one of the most confusing. The honest answer has two parts, and the second is the one that matters to your cash flow.

Short answer: no, not the way you are picturing it

There is no official international PIX today. Brazil's central bank is working on connecting PIX to instant payment systems in other countries, but that is not yet a service a Brazilian company can use to charge a foreign customer "by PIX".

What does exist are bilateral arrangements between institutions. In practice, Brazilian tourists can already pay by PIX at merchants in a handful of markets — Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, the United States, Portugal, Spain and France — but that works through agreements between financial institutions, not through a universal connection of the system.

Note that this case is the reverse of yours: it is a Brazilian paying abroad. You want the opposite — a foreigner paying you.

The answer that matters: you do not need international PIX

Here is the point almost every article on the subject gets wrong. To sell abroad and get paid by PIX, PIX does not need to cross the border. The operation splits into two independent decisions:

1. How the customer abroad pays. They pay through the method they already use in their own country — SPEI in Mexico, MercadoPago in Argentina, Bre-B or PSE in Colombia, QR in Bolivia, DEUNA in Ecuador. They do not have PIX, do not need it, and will not open a Brazilian bank account to buy from you.

2. How the money reaches you. That is where PIX comes in — on the Brazilian end, you receive the converted balance straight into your company account.

The conceptual mistake is treating those two as the same thing. They are not. Anyone trying to solve both with a single product ends up offering international cards to everyone — and watching approval fall.

Why this converts better

When the customer pays through the local method:

And when you settle by PIX, the money lands in the company account without depending on a traditional international wire, without a multi-day wait and without opening a foreign bank account.

What about the legal side? Brazil's FX rules changed

A question that always comes along: "am I allowed to receive this? do I have to bring it all into Brazil?"

Brazil's FX legal framework changed. Law 14,286/2021, applying to operations from 2 January 2023, modernised the rules and — the key point here — made it optional to keep foreign-currency proceeds from Brazilian exports abroad. More than that: it removed old restrictions on how those funds could be used, which today may be applied to any lawful purpose.

In practical terms: bringing the money into Brazil became a choice, not an automatic obligation. You can hold a balance abroad to pay local costs, or settle via PIX whenever it suits your cash flow.

This does not replace accounting advice. Tax and documentation rules still apply and vary depending on whether you export goods or services — talk to your accountant before scaling.

The three exit routes

Once the customer has paid abroad, the balance can take three paths:

Route When it makes sense
Keep local currency You have costs in that country — team, suppliers, media
Settle via PIX You want the money in Brazil, in the company account
Settle in crypto Markets with restricted or volatile FX

Not choosing is also a choice: an idle balance in a volatile currency is a financial position somebody will have to explain at month-end close.

What to do now

  1. Stop waiting for international PIX. What solves your problem already exists.
  2. Find the dominant method in the country you sell to — across most of Latin America it is not the card.
  3. Separate the collection decision from the settlement decision. They are two, not one.
  4. Align with accounting before scaling volume.

Our Global Processing does exactly this: the customer pays through their country's local method, and you receive in local currency, PIX or crypto. See how to get paid in Latin America, country by country or talk to our team.
